The Mustangs are the 2019 Birmingham City Middle School Football Champions!

For the first time ever, the Birmingham City Board of Education voted to implement true feeder patterns for the 2019 – 2020 school year. Principal Ashley Samuels, Bush Hills Steam Academy, and Principal Anthony Oliver, Green Acres Middle, agreed to have one team, the Jackson-Olin Middle School Mustangs (a combination program of two feeder schools for Jackson-Olin High School). As a result of their vision, the JOMS Mustangs are the 2019 Birmingham City Middle School Football Champions!

The championship game, played at Wenonah High School last night, was the second meeting between the Western Division Champion Mustangs and the Eastern Division Champion J. H. Phillips Academy Lions (the Lions won the first meeting in double overtime). Coach Justin Kelly’s Lions led the game 6-0 at the half, but Coach Dale Simmons’ Mustangs would take a 12 – 6 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the game. After a short kick-off, the Lions completed a 53 yard touchdown pass forcing overtime with a 12-12 tie! Phillips got the ball first and was shut down by JOMS. The Mustangs ran the ball on three consecutive plays to take an 18 – 12 overtime victory!

Congratulations!
